A lot of people will go to the Cooking Hawaiian Style website and then say, “That’s not Hawaiian or Hawaii food,” and to that, I always respond, “It’s all Hawaii food. It’s food that we all grew up eating. We are so lucky in Hawaii to get to eat food from all over the world, and the website reflects this.”

This particular recipe was given to us by David Ryusaki, one of the website’s contributors. It’s a dish his mom made for him while growing up in Hawaii.

TATER TOT CASSEROLE

• 1 pound ground beef
• 2 eggs
• 2 slices bread, broken into pieces
• 1 round onion, chopped
• 1/3 cup milk
• 2 tablespoons dry onion soup mix
• 1 can cream of mushroom soup
• 1 can cream of chicken soup
• 1 box frozen potato tater tots
• 1 cup frozen peas (optional)
• 1 cup Cheddar cheese
• dash each salt and pepper

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, eggs, bread, milk, onion, salt and pepper. Mix very well. Lightly press mixture evenly on the bottom of a 9-by-13-inch pan.

Combine both cans of soup with the onion soup mix and (optional) peas. Pour over meat.

Layer top of casserole with cheese and top with tater tots. Bake, uncovered, for 40-45 minutes.
