Supporting Parents, Improving Families

By Michele Wilson, participant coordinator, Family Hui

Magdalena Petko, a former participant with parent collective Family Hui, had this to say about her experience with the group:

“I was desperate for support with my two young kids. At first I thought the hui was a playgroup, but within the first two meetings I felt as though I had a supportive network of friends (who) didn’t judge me by my appearance, how I spoke or how I raised my children. We were always there to help one another as we learned patience, tolerance and positive parenting strategies together. My children and I have forged lifelong friendships that continue to be a source of great support to this day. The hui was a transformational experience for my whole family!”

Family Hui builds on the strong foundation of the former Baby Hui organization, which served an average of 400 families per year. Our intention is to support as many families as possible on all islands, so that every child in every family is thriving, healthy and safe.

We offer a 12-week program for families with children ages 0-5 that provides valuable information and tips on positive ways of dealing with the shared challenges of parenting. The program covers an array of topics such as child development, nutrition, family life, positive discipline and school readiness. Ninety percent of our hui stay connected well beyond the 12 weeks.

Our funding currently supports 100 families. The Learning Coalition and HMSA Foundation provided foundational support, with a primary focus on families in Kahaluu, Kaneohe and Kalihi. Other areas we serve include Honolulu, Mililani and Kailua. Families can join a Daytime, Friday Pau Hana or Weekend Hui.

Family Hui raises funds through grants, partnerships and individual donations received through our website. Our greatest challenge is to secure statewide funding. We currently are seeking investment in the development of recurring income streams and searching for a videographer who can help tell the Family Hui story.
