School Counting On Concert Under Stars

The Lanikai School PTSA’s Concert Under the Stars will feature two Windward bands and a “surprise headliner” from 4 to 9 p.m. April 28 at Lanikai Community Park.

The concert kicks off with a chant by the students at 3:45 p.m., followed by Kailua Bay Buddies, Breath of Fire and the surprise guest. Families also can check out the student art, food booths, activities and a silent auction. A shuttle will run from the school to the park, where only low-back chairs are allowed and no alcoholic beverages.

A portion of the silent auction proceeds will benefit the fourth-graders’ upcoming social studies tour of the Big Island.

Tickets cost $20 for adults and $10 for keiki in advance, or $25 for adults at the door. For more information, go to lanikaielementary.com.

In light of the severe budget cuts statewide, the annual fundraiser is especially critical this year when the per-pupil outlay is even more dire for public charters schools like Lanikai. According to school director Ed Noh, charters already receive $250 less per pupil than other DOE schools. Lanikai, however, is holding on to its art, music and P.E. classes – and high academic scores – while hoping for a boost from the public at the concert.

Supporters also may donate via PayPal on the website, or make checks out to Lanikai School and mail to 140 Alala Road, Kailua, HI 96734.
