FROM PAGE 1
storytelling that graphic nov- els present are two things that have always caught his attention, and have also been shown to captivate the imag- inations of more and more young readers each year.
“Graphic novels provide such a unique marriage be- tween the depth of tradi- tional written stories and the dramatic imagery of comic books,” he explains.
The book’s main charac- ter, Haku, is a young local boy of about 8 years old. He is clever, imaginative and has a big heart. Meanwhile, Sam is Haku’s robot creation and best friend, made from items Haku found in the trash and around his island home. Sam is funny, adven- turous and just a bit naïve.

The creator of this vibrant volume, Petosa-Sigel, has lived in Kailua ever since his family migrated over from Seattle, Washington, when he was 2. He attended Lanikai Elementary School, where his mom has taught art for almost 19 years. The school has since been re- named Kaʻohao Elementary School.

He says that most of his artistic abilities were learned outside of the classroom.
“I used to spend most of my time in elementary school drawing between the margins of my math or science note- books, or turning my friends into cartoons during recess and making up stories to put them in,” he says.
“I was really excited about the idea of possibly going forward with the idea of writing the storyline for the characters as well as creating the illustrations, and Beach- House was gracious enough to allow me to do that and see where it would go,” he em- phasizes.
“I would like to thank my family and BeachHouse Pub- lishing LLC for helping me

“I come from a family of many different kinds of artists, from art teachers to graphic designers to tat- too artists,” he elaborates. “My mom has also illus- trated many local children’s books. Because the artis- tic mediums of my family are so diverse, we all have taught each other different skills, and I have learned a lot from my family as I have grown up.”
Petosa-Sigel previously self-published his own orig- inal comic book called The Shaneivurse in 2020.
He says that Haku and Sam serves as a reminder of the importance of children’s imaginations and friendship.
