Kailua has been rec- ognized by the National Weath- er Service as a Tsunami Ready-Storm Ready Com- munity, the third recogni- tion since 2012. The certif- icate was presented during the Kailua Neighborhood Board’s April 7 meeting by the NWS warning coordi- nation meteorologist John Bravender. April is also Tsunami Awareness Month in Hawai‘i. Following the March 2011 Tohoku, Japan, earthquake and tsunami, volunteers from the Kailua Neighborhood Board, Kai- lua Community Emergency Response Team and Kailua Alert & Prepared worked with federal, state and lo- cal emergency management agencies to promote pre- paredness. Public aware- ness training and emer- gency preparedness fairs educated the community on how to be self-reliant during and after a natural disaster. The Tsunami Ready-Storm Ready Community program is a grassroots approach representing the NWS high- est level of commitment to safety and preparedness in a weather-ready nation.
