Holding Period Begins For Iconic Eddie Invitational
The North Shore has turned on again and hope- fully for the long haul. Waves were a bit up and down much of November. I know that sounds normal, but by mid-to-late Novem- ber, we should pretty much be up, not down, in the surf production department.
The surf at Hale‘iwa was not optimal, but the perfor- mances were. I personally love seeing the best surfers in subpar conditions to wit- ness how they can make the most of imperfection. We don’t often realize how ver- satile these men and women are. They can rip anything. It’s inspiring.
The city permits are all approved, now all we need is Mother Nature to do the same. The holding peri- od started Dec. 1 and will run through February. All we need is 20-25-foot surf with good conditions for an eight-hour time frame.
It’s no guarantee this spe- cial 10th event will go — even with three months to wait. Since 1984, the contest has only run nine times. The Aikaus hold high surf stan- dards to honor their fami- ly’s legend, Eddie. He held the highest standards, not just with surfing and saving lives but the ultimate, great- est standard — giving your own life for others. Thank you, Eddie.
Luckily, on Nov. 26, Mother Nature provided us with a sizeable 8-10-foot northwest swell — right as the season for big surf competition restarted. That kicked off the first day of the holding period for the Michelob Ultra Pure Gold Hale‘iwa Challenger Se-
We just saw one of the biggest north swells in re- cent memory last weekend. Yes, this season we’ve seen a 20-foot northwest at Jaws (Pe‘ahi) on Maui but a pure north angle is rare at this size.

The storm that created it was just to the north of us with over 30-foot seas. The track was bizarre, too. Most storms move west to east but this one tracked to west-northwest and veered west-southwest of Hawai‘i. It brought tons of lousy weather and weird winds, too. All the details are at
Earth’s best big wave surfers will descend on our 7-mile miracle and laser in on Waimea Bay, the most culturally significant surf spot in the world.
The iconic Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational at Waimea is back in the take- off zone. The Aikau ‘ohana announced during the last week of November that “Eddie Will Go,” if surf is
