     A mong the student athletes signing their collegiate commit- ments on National Letter of Intent Signing Day Nov. 10 was Kailua’s Kaikea Harri- son who will play baseball at Texas A&M. A senior middle infielder at Punahou School, Kaikea will follow in the foot- steps of older brother Kalae, a sophomore at Texas A&M and shortstop for the Aggies. Kaikea is one of five boys for parents Kenny and Kaleka Harrison. Their oldest KJ is playing professional baseball for the Washington Nation- als, while second oldest Ka- leo is a senior at University of Washington graduating in medical anthropology and global health. Their youngest Kahaku is an eighth-grader at Punahou ... The East-West Center Board of Governors has selected Suzanne Va- res-Lum of Kāne‘ohe to be the institution’s next president. Kaikea Harrison
general in the U.S. Army, Va- res-Lum, who goes by Suzy, is the first woman and first Native Hawaiian to lead the center since it was founded in 1960. Born and raised in Wa- hiawā, Vares-Lum received a bachelor’s degree in journal- ism and a Master of Education in teaching from University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, and a Mas- ter of Strategic Studies from U.S. Army War College. As a major general in the Army, she advised the most senior officials in the U.S. Indo-Pa- cific Command, where she maintained key relationships among nations within the Asia Pacific Region. After retir- ing from the military in April with 34 years of service, she formed a consultancy on In- do-Pacific issues. She is a sea- soned speaker and advocate on regional issues; leadership development; and women, peace and security, and has led a number of collaborative ini- tiatives in the Pacific.
