hile Scott Coffey currently lives halfway around the world in Spain, the Kailua native re-
mains grounded in his Windward-side roots and traces back everything he does as a filmmaker to his island home and influences gained here.
Coffey grew up in Kailua, “mostly in Maunawili,” he says, “where we still have a family house.” He recalls his childhood when he “disappeared into the movies, and pretty much everything I know about life is from the cinema.” As an actor in his 20s, Coffey performed in an array of movies and television ventures, but the process “kind of bored me even though I was successful at it.”
He explains that while he “made a lot of money, traveled the world and met the most amazing characters on movie sets,” acting presented intellectual and creative limits.
