hile it is technically a new park as far as its name is concerned, Nāo- neala‘a a Kāne‘ohe is rich in histo-
ry and Native Hawaiian cultural significance. A blessing ceremony was held Aug. 4 mark- ing the renaming of the City & County of Honolulu park, formerly known as Kāne‘ohe Beach Park, and celebrating the unveiling of a donated storyboard describing the historical
significance of the 1.05-acre area.
“It’s a blessing to be part of this because
it’s an awesome example of reclaiming ‘āina and giving this place back its dignity and his- tory by sharing the story of Nāoneala‘a,” says Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation deputy director Kēhaulani Pu‘u. “It’s an exam- ple of the values we want to instill in our com- munities so they can come to love and respect (mālama) these places — our parks.”
In 1867, Hawaiian historian Samuel Ka- makau detailed how the area encompassing the park came was known as Nāoneala‘a, which means “the Sands of La‘amaikahiki,” after the
