We finished up with the Sunset Pro regional qualifier presented by HIC on Nov. 4 off the point at Sunset. The three-day event started with two days inside Val’s Reef, which is close to shore. It’s very rare to see Sunset aver- age 3 feet swells the entire waiting period. Alas, Mother Nature calls the shots — both the big and the small ones.
“I’m super stoked to surf Sunset again in a contest and to get another win,” Mamiya says. “It’s been a super good event. The waves were small the first couple days, but the last day was super fun, so I’m stoked to get some good waves.”

I’m always so impressed with how the best surfers make the most of what they have. I’ve never seen Val’s Reef ridden so well. This new generation is hungry. Actually, they need to be starving given the high lev- el that awaits them on the Challenger Series and World Championship Tour.

a WCT standout this year on the biggest stage — so he brought a lot of confi- dence to the QS. He can surf anything, from maxing at Pipeline to 12-foot waves at Sunset. If Mamiya plays his competitive prowess prop- erly, he could make top five next year. His talent is there and if he adds “ruthlessness competitive machine” to the
