hile Seagull Schools is well- known for its five preschools that serve nearly 830 keiki on
O‘ahu, it is also famous for founding the first intergenerational adult day center on the is- land. Established in 2005, the Kapolei cen- ter serves kūpuna and their families on the Westside in a unique way: seniors are able to integrate their daily activities with keiki.
“Evidence has shown that incorporating keiki can promote the health and overall well-being of our seniors. Our location is adjacent to our Kapolei preschool, allowing for easy facilitation of our intergenerational program and client activities,” says Megan McCorriston, CEO at Seagull Schools.
Unfortunately, in March 2020, the adult day center had to close down in order to pro- tect the vulnerable kūpuna population from the pandemic.
As of today, Seagull Schools is excited to reopen the kūpuna day center, which is led by director Noraleen Pahinui, on Sept. 5 — with some scale backs and changes.
