West O‘ahu Residents Can Help Others With Giving Machine
  BY DON ROBBINS
With that in mind, from Nov. 20 through Jan. 2, West O‘ahu residents can use a Giving Machine located at Pearlridge Center. It will be filled with goods and services that they can purchase, which will go directly to help those less fortunate. Two Giving Machines will be located at Pearlridge Mauka Level 1 below the Satellite City Hall, and accessible seven days a week during center hours of operation.
Looking and working much like any other vending device, these Giving Machines have individually priced cards in- side describing items that a Hawai‘i person or families in need will get. A few examples include a kid’s dental hygiene kit, a rice cooker, a bag of groceries, new baby gear, a mattress, payment of rent and utility bills and others.
The church pays for all of the administrative fees, marketing and other ex- penses, Kamauu shares. None of the money comes back to the church, he adds. Instead, the intent of the project is to raise awareness of needs, invite the public to give and serve, and amplify community engagement.
There’s a well-known prov- erb noting that it’s better to give than to receive.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints sponsors the program, and this year it is partnering with four local charitable organizations — The Salvation Army, Helping Hands Hawai‘i, Aloha Medi- cal Mission and Family Prom- ise of Hawai‘i — to distribute the goods and services.
“That’s the agreement we have with all the nonprofits. We want that whatever an individual purchases from the Giving Machine, that item is going to be delivered by the nonprofit organization to a recipient,” explains the church’s Hawai‘i communi- cations director H. Wailana Kamauu Jr.

People can also donate globally, as well, through charities like CARE. Donors can choose to pay for two chickens, which would give a family needed income from egg production, and more.
Giving Machines will take debit and all major credit cards, but not cash. When people put their card in the machine, make a purchase and take their card out, they will receive a printed tax-deductible re- ceipt, Kamauu says.
