As soon as you see them, you think of Hawaiʻi, but without me having to be overly explicit about it. The main subjects can be either surfers, divers or marine life, and they help me tell a story about life on these islands. A lot of these stories are about protecting our environment, and I usually place a card with the story next to my ex- hibiting pieces.”

The father of two moved to Makakilo in 2014 after living out of state for some time.
“I didn’t like it much at first — I felt a bit isolated from the town art scene here — but then I realized that it was a benefit,” Bolioli says about moving to the area. “Makakilo grows on you. I’m close to the waves in the summer as well as the winter and, best of all, I hardly need to use the A/C up here.”

In Bolioli’s work, his love for Hawaiʻi is obvious. His creative process isn’t force- ful; he doesn’t sit down in front of a canvas to create. Rather, he feels an urge to paint and his visions then come to life.

In recent years, Bolioli was the artist in residence at Four Seasons Resort Oʻahu at Ko ʻOlina, where he held three exhibits: My Surreal Island Life, Westside Stories and Life on Board.
“Working closely with Sunny Garcia was unbeliev- able,” he shares. “Painting his boards with absolutely no restrictions (and) going as wild as I could trying to reflect his exploding surf- ing.”
