6 MIDWEEK MARCH 8, 2023
Dr. Jack Scaff, a noted cardiologist and also dubbed “the Father of the Marathon,” used running as a rehabilitation program for his patients recovering from heart attacks. As the medical community scoffed, whis- pering there would be “dead bodies littering the streets of Honolulu,” Scaff continued to train his patients and to run himself. His patient Val Nolasco then became the first American heart attack victim to finish a marathon in 1973.
The Hawai‘i Sports Foun- dation, dba The Honolulu Marathon Clinic, was formed in 1974 and has been dedi- cated to training runners of all ages and experience lev- els to complete a marathon. Because heart disease and stroke, cancer and diabetes are among the most common, costly and preventable health problems in the United States today, it was felt that when done properly, there was no other treatment as cost effec- tive and fun as habitual phys- ical exercise.

Sadly, my husband, Jack, passed away last September, but I am determined to con- tinue promoting the Honolu- lu Marathon Clinic as a tool to encourage fitness through a walking and running pro- gram.
All runners and would-be runners from across the is- land are invited to join us. We welcome a new generation of runners and we see this as a noteworthy opportunity to let the public know who we are and what we do. We have trained thousands to complete a marathon and proudly boast a 90% completion rate. Our successful training protocol has been adopted by similar programs in Australia, Can- ada, Hong Kong, New Zea- land, the Philippines and sev- eral U.S. states.
