6 MIDWEEK JANUARY 11, 2023
As cars and emergen- cy vehicles whiz by and H-1 rages above, traveling down Uni- versity Avenue from Univer- sity of Hawai‘i at Mānoa into Mo‘ili‘ili requires height- ened senses just to stay safe. Seeking a place of solace from life’s cacophony might not be on your mind, but nes- tled between the freeway on- ramp and old Varsity Theater lies Church of the Cross- roads. Duck underneath its banyan, monkey pod and gold trees, and you will find a setting that has welcomed the community as a place for peace and sanctuary.

A Century Of Welcoming All At The Crossroads
By the Rev. David Baumgart Turner, pastor at Church of the Crossroads
from Mid-Pacific Institute, UH and McKinley High School, committed to build- ing the state’s first intention- ally integrated church where all were welcome — where there was a strong sense of social justice, where young people gathered for religious services that felt relevant. In 1992, Crossroads also declared itself a Just Peace Church, aligning with na- tional and local movements for peace and justice (includ- ing Hawaiian sovereignty), and also stating that envi- ronmental justice (caring for God’s creation) was integral to creating a world of peace and justice. We are a green- ing community, cook meals weekly for the Institute for Human Services, are advo- cates for progressive legis- lation, and demonstrate for a more just world.
The grounds and facili- ties, designed by renowned
architect Claude Stiehl, have been a gathering place for the community throughout its history. While the world rushes by, find a sense of peace on their beautiful grounds, a sense of wel- come in community groups and events we support, and a place of worship that be- lieves no matter where you are in life’s journey you are welcome here.
Many Hawai‘i residents remember the tumultuous days of Vietnam and will remember when this church, against the wishes of many, provided sanctuary to sol- diers refusing to serve an im- moral and unjust war. Cross- roads continues to live on the
