fresh, healthy and modern there, and the coffee culture is like every corner of the street you smell good coffee.
While Amatawet is taking care of the sit-down service side, Kwok handles everything else, including the picturesque grazing boards (which can be ordered 24-48 hours in advance for a pickup at the restaurant) and all back-of-the- house matters.
“Being a flight attendant is kind of like another step from food — you learn about peo- ple, you learn about culture — and the more you travel, the more you get to try different food and learn about different cultures. From that part of my life, I knew that I wanted to fo- cus on my passion, so I went to culinary school.”
Yim Kwok
I would go to the farmers mar- ket every morning with her. We lived in a really big family, so my grandma would always cook big meals with lots of pots and pans. My grandpa and grandma also sold food; they had a food stall in our small town. We were always surrounded by food. It plays a big role in my life.”
“It’s very challenging. It’s so much taxes, ordering, in- ventory, marketing, clients — all of that. I totally appre- ciate all of the small business- es. I’m a mom, too, and when we founded Fig & Ginger, my son was only 1 year old. I felt like I had two newborns at the same time.”
A graduate of Kapi‘olani Community College, Kwok has always had a special place
t. in her heart for cooking.
“I spent so much time, if not every day, with my grand- mother,” she says. “When I was young, I would cook with her and watch her cook.
While being an entrepre- neur is no easy feat, Kwok is spending her days doing what she loves with good food, good friends and good times.
