think of the latest Marvel movie?), David Yonamine hopes to create a system in which people can be everyday champions from the comfort of their homes.
“We use current technolo- gies that make it a lot easier and less cumbersome to clean more regularly,” Yonamine explains. “We started HIRO because we saw dental offices that were making face shields and com- munities feeding seniors. We just felt the community com- ing to each other’s aid, and we just wanted to help and provide something that wasn’t so toxic. We saw people spraying these pesticides all over the place and it was really concerning.”
Without getting too tech- nical, Yonamine explains that his products use hypochlorous acid (or HOCL, for short).
HIRO Systems Hawai‘i sells units that are small enough to fit in a purse or perch on a desk, as well as large, stationary units that Yonamine nicknamed “the bouncer,” as they’re often situ- ated near doorways.
At his Ala Moana Center storefront (1450 Ala Moana Blvd. Ste. 1235), Yonamine en- courages residents to stop by to ask questions or just talk story.
“So often during the pan- demic, we felt like, ‘Man, I wish a hero could come here and just help us right now?’” asks the Kaka‘ako resident. “And we said, ‘Well, maybe if we can’t wait for a hero, we can inspire and create systems that can make everyone a hero.’”
of the country’s top chemists — got down to business. He began calling doctors, scien- tists and professors using what he calls “an aloha card.”
“I always tell people, ‘Don’t be scared because it has the word acid in it.’ HOCL is actually something that’s naturally occurring in our bloodstream; our white blood cells use HOCL to fight infection. As of today, dentists and ophthalmologists use this solution on open eyes and mouth surgery. Not only is it a great sanitizer and dis-
“They’re white units in front of storefronts that are on a motion sensor, so when people walk up to it, it turns on and can do a full body clean- ing,” he explains, adding that the solution is dry to the touch so it’s perfect for people on the go. “The kids love it, they do a whole hokey pokey dance.”
“It’s been probably the big- gest honor of my life to help people here,” he says. “We have so many kūpuna or con- cerned people walk out of our store with a peace of mind and happiness ... overjoyed that they know where to go and they can call us any time. We’re here to help them.”
That’s the heart behind his business, HIRO Systems Hawai‘i, a company that dis-
