Filmmaking has always been Jeff Orig’s one true love. Even when he was pursuing other fields such as web design and real es- tate development, his end-goal was to make enough money to eventually be able to finance a film career.

After years of putting his passion on the back burner, it sadly took Orig a tragic loss to realize there is no better time than now to chase your dreams.
“My son inspired me to get into filmmaking,” shares Orig. “I wanted to be an example to him of somebody who had a dream and at least went for it and I tried, rather than being someone who had a dream but pushed aside because of fear. Our son died at birth. It was devastating. I’ve gone through so many emotions and depres- sion and all kinds of stuff, but what helped me get out of it was thinking about how he in- spired me to become a better person and to become a better example for him.”

Department, Aloha United Way and Highway Inn. Orig Entertainment, meanwhile, creates original productions, including a workout show on OC16 (Upside Down Pilates), a K-pop reaction YouTube channel that boasts hundreds of thousands of views and Waikīkī PD, a web series- turned-film franchise that fol- lows a fictional police depart- ment based in — you guessed it — Waikīkī. The second movie (Waikīkī PD Part 2) premieres at 7 p.m. July 30 at Entrepreneur Sandbox (tickets cost $20 and can be purchased on eventbrite.com by searching “Laughter and a T-shirt”).
To that end, the difference between Orig Media and Orig Entertainment boils down to who decides what is created. Orig Media, for example, cre- ates marketing and fundraising videos for a plethora of clien- tele, including Honolulu Fire
When it comes to his favor- ite part, Orig says he “simply loves making stuff.”

“I love when we make
something and audiences re- spond. For example, with our movies, I’ ll do focus groups and we’ll test to see where the laughs are or if it’s like crick- ets,” he says. “It’s so rewarding and satisfying to hear audienc- es responding in ways that I hoped they would or in ways that surprise me.”

To honor his son’s memory, Orig established two compa- nies — Orig Media and Orig Entertainment — and includ- ed the infant’s footprint in both logos.
On top of that, Orig is a “nerd for the gear” (he espe- cially loves mixing modern tech with vintage equipment) and also enjoys collaborating with the community as well as his cast and crew.
When Orig started out, he recalls working out of his liv- ing room, editing a friend’s video for $50. Nowadays, the Salt Lake resident has got quite the upgrade with a space in Union Plaza.
“It’s made by locals for lo- cals,” states Orig, who serves as the film’s creator and pro- ducer. “The way we’re por- trayed in the media and other shows is often very inaccurate and stereotypical. This is sort of our take on poking fun at those kinds of media as well as telling our own local-style of jokes.”
“I’ve been on a variety of different kinds of sets through- out my career — from super indie to big budget — and be- cause this is our own thing, I’m a believer that we can make up the rules however we want,” he says. “I believe great ideas can come from anywhere. I’m more than happy to listen to an intern or listen to a client. If it comes from any source, I’ m happy to take it and implement it and create the best thing pos- sible.”
