  Dear Darah,
A big mahalo to four hardworking classmates from Roosevelt High School’s Class of 1958, who have been responsible for very successful reunions this year and in the past. They put in lots of time and effort. Though our 80th reunion in 2020 didn’t happen, they made sure we celebrated this year. Alex Uyeda, Doris Ya- mauchi Ching, Sharon Hicks and Karen Dobashi Seward organized a fun two days of songs, games, jokes, (thanks to Alex) and lots of reminisc- ing. They are so appreciated.
Pat McLachlan Paterson Mō‘ili‘ili
Dear Pat,
Sharon says, “I have enjoyed being involved in the planning for over 40 years. Growing up in Ha- wai‘i in the 1950s when our population was less than 500,000 has very special memories of hitchhiking, keeping your doors open, and crashing high school and beach parties. Wearing ponytails and crinolines; dancing the ‘bop’ ; blue- chromed Pontiacs; Olds- mobiles with quad head- lamps; hamburgers were 25 cents at KC Drive Inn and carhops delivered fries and malts; football games at the stadium selling soft-
boiled peanuts.
“In 1997, I had an idea to
ing Teddy Randazzo, Ron- ny Diamond, Robin Luke, Royal Drifters and The Shirelles. The 1958 grand 40th reunion at Blaisdell court and concert hall, was transformed into Hawai‘i’s largest gymnasium: biggest gym dance in the state’s history. The walls were festooned with banners from every high school in Hawai‘i — over 2,000 in attendance.
Asato, Farrington, Wisteria and KC Drive Inn; Elmer Takenishi, dentist, ‘Iolani; attorneys David Fairbanks, Punahou, and Bert Ko- bayashi, Roosevelt; state Sen. Cal Kawamoto, Hilo; Doris Yamauchi Ching, vice president of UH, Roosevelt; Malcolm Koga of Koga Engineering; and myself of Hicks Homes.”

Sharon and Pat, what an honor it is to reminisce in these memories with you. This sounds like it was such a wonderful time to be alive — I know I’d love a 25-cent hamburger! Mahalo nui to all the “organized plan- ners” in our lives, who bring people together and create a space to make memories
