Police Protect Family, Push Car To Safety
JUNE 8, 2022 MIDWEEK 7
     Dear Darah,
“A few weeks ago, one of my family members ran our can gas tank empty on the H-1 eastbound approaching the Punahou exit. It must have been about 1:30 a.m. The car was stalled just past the bend nearing Shriners Hospital. As I went to assist and get some gas from a near- by station, I was fortunate to see a police officer at the same station and asked him to ren- der help. He was kind enough to follow me and summon two or three other police cars parked an earshot away. They protected us as we filled gas and tried to jump-start the ve- hicle.
It’s a dangerous curve, and even at 1:30 in the morning, cars were flying around that corner. The police said that even with their police lights flashing, cars have crashed into them before elsewhere. As our van would not start, they were kind enough to get out of their cars and push us on foot all the way around the corner just past Shriners. Much mahalo to our law en- forcement ‘ohana for cheer- fully providing protection and kōkua. You have a difficult job to perform and are not always adequately appreciated. We salute you! Mahalo!”

Dear Colin,
We believe it was the first watch officers from District 7’s Sector 1 who assisted this family. They are Cpls. Jarrett De Soto and Hayes Marumoto, and officers Alika Kahalepuna and Ryan Villegas. “I’m not surprised to hear that they did this,” says Maj. Brian Lynch, Dis- trict 7 commander. “Our officers regularly assist mo- torists on the freeway even when it means risking their own personal safety. We ap- preciate you acknowledging their work.”
“This happened at Times Beretania. After doing my grocery shopping and going

to check out, the cashier said there was a zero balance in my account. I began crying because that was the second error in my finances that day. We had to put all the grocer- ies back and never was I so embarrassed. A lady and her daughter came up to my car and handed me what I thought was a business card. I took it and said, ʻThank you’ and drove away. Every week since that day, I go back and shop for the sole purpose of giving
that lady back the money that was on the card she handed me. Like a fool, I just drove away not really paying atten- tion to the kindness that had been given to me — a strang- er. I am hoping to repay that kindness to her.”
