SEPTEMBER 29, 2021 MIDWEEK 7
Toy Poodle Was Lost, But Now She’s Found
   Dear Darah,
You never know when your family is going to experience a crisis. On Aug. 15, our toy poodle, Kayleigh Rose, went missing. While hiking Likeke Falls Trail, our dogs got scared at the sight of four hunting dogs. Although (my other poodle) Bella stayed by my side, upon seeing these dogs, Kayleigh Rose ran back down the trail. Bella and I immedi- ately turned around and went looking. I felt comforted on the way down because every- one we passed said they had just seen her. I made it all the way back to the Ko‘olau Golf
Club parking lot, but she was nowhere in sight. We walked up and down the parking lot for the first hour until some- one said they spotted her run- ning onto the golf course. For the next two hours, we walked the golf course, no luck.
for. Kayleigh Rose had been found. A retired couple who often hikes the Likeke Trail had her. Kayleigh Rose was hurt — she had a deep punc- ture wound under her left leg that was bleeding. They scooped her up and took her to their home, where they fed and cuddled her close until we could get there. The drive to get her seemed like an eterni- ty with all the traffic. My dad was shaking with excitement and anticipation. We were so relieved that she was alive and relatively OK.

it magical and surreal at the same time. Just like that, our family was whole again. After some picture taking and pro- found thank yous, it was off to Feather & Fur Animal Hos- pital. Kayleigh Rose ended up having to spend the night. She had to have surgery on her left leg due to the wound she suf- fered. We were able to take her home the next day.
are to have her back. We also know how fortunate we are to live in such a caring commu- nity. We would like to thank the following people who made our reunion possible: the Nelson family for rescuing our little girl; Steven, the man- ager at Ko‘olau Ballrooms; John and the City & County security crew for helping with the search; First Presbyterian Church for allowing access on the property every day; the Magnum P.I. crew; Kathy, Bridgett, and the countless tourists and hikers for helping with the search; everyone on Facebook and Nextdoor; and the staff at Feather & Fur An- imal Hospital.

Dear Ashleigh,
It’s inspiring to hear sto- ries of lost pets finding their way back to their families. Steven of Ko‘olau Ball- rooms says, “We did it be- cause a pet like that is part of their family. We didn’t think about it, we just wanted to help them as much as we could and spread the word.” Rescuer Jaynine Nelson adds, “It was a real pleasure to help them get their baby back. If you’re a dog owner, you understand.”

Upon making it back to the parking lot, we heard that Kayleigh was spotted on-site for Magnum P.I. filming in the area, but she ran back toward the trail. After eight hours of combined searching, we had to give up for the night. That that would be the last sighting of Kayleigh Rose for the next eight days.
Walking into the rescuers’ backyard, we saw Kayleigh Rose, thin, tired and injured, but alive. Let me just say, this was a very emotional moment. The relief and joy mixed with those sleepless nights made
