The Atherton family made the original Fernhurst loca- tion at the corner of Alapai and King streets their home for more than 40 years before gifting it to YWCA in 1921. Mrs. Juliette Atherton was pivotal in making this gift to honor her daughter, Katie, who died in 1919. Fernhurst is said to be named for the many ferns that grew around the property, likely planted by Mrs. Atherton, who was a botanist. By giving Fernhurst to YWCA O‘ahu, Mrs. Ather- ton sowed the seeds for what would become a special place in Honolulu, with a history of
Early in its existence, Fern- hurst was a temporary home for working women. Its cur- rent Makiki site also served as a secure stopover for sin- gle girls and women travel- ing alone between Asia and the mainland United States. A century later, there is still a need for safe and affordable housing. Fernhurst now wel- comes a range of women who are coming out of challenging circumstances, such as incar- ceration, domestic violence and substance abuse.
