    Aloha surfers and beachgoers,
The grand fina- le of the summer was, of course, the Duke’s Ocean- fest. It scored amazing waves for pretty much all eight days. The epic south-southwest swell came in on day one and kept going and going, like the Energizer Bunny. With more than 15 events, this iconic ocean fes- tival is truly special.

Winning first place was the Outrigger Waikīkī team with legend Laura Blears. Born in 1951, she was a charismatic, barrier-breaking surfer in the early 1970s in Honolulu.
Special thanks to head organizers Jim Fulton and Chris Colgate for making the Duke’s Oceanfest a huge success. It’s no simple feat, but you and your amazing team did it again. We all owe you our gratitude. Aloha.
Heath Hemmings, age 52, from Kailua and son of the legendary Fred Hemmings, took first place in the over- all finishers’ list. I have to send congratulations also to the North Shore’s big wave warrior Chris Owens, who took fifth place at 62 years young. Also, my buddy and Surf News Network report- er Blair Thorndike, age 59, came in at a respectable 12th.

Sallas. Even a second place is impressive when there are 20 heats of teams going for the top spot.
The Outrigger Legends Surfing Invitational, mean- while, is always a treat. It’s when a business selects its team and partners up with a legend to surf with, against other teams in a spirit of re- spect and good will.
Congrats to each and ev- eryone who joined in the fun. You know Duke is smiling down on all of us.
