s the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics take place, ‘Aiea Heights resident Jo- seph “Joe” Summerfield has a special
rooting interest from across the Pacific.
The 76-year-old was born and raised in West Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and still ice skates today after first taking up the sport at 12 years old. He explains that the sport piqued his interest as “I became very intrigued with the unique ability to do so many different
moves that the blade on ice could create.”
As his skills improved, Summerfield pushed himself, learning advanced and challenging jumps and spins. He was educated by some of the sport’s top coaches, including Jean West- wood of England, a five-time world ice dance
champion.
“I was fortunate to have world-class winning
coaches,” Summerfield says. “Over a 10-year span, I accomplished, in test structure, three gold medals in the fields of figure/freestyle, ice dancing and free dance. I competed in the Ca- nadian Nationals in men’s singles for two years (fourth place) and one year in senior men’s in
