Love Of Learning Will Keep Keiki Sharp Beyond School

families without regular ac- cess to the internet, she says, but adds that there are simple steps parents and caregivers can take to keep keiki engaged and learning during the sum- mer.
“Build a budget at home ...and then make a (grocery list),” she says. “Write down some of the things you might need for a recipe. Then go to the store and find those items.”

are able to take time off in the summer. Bailey-Walsh suggests those families look into summer programs that can keep keiki academically, emotionally and physically engaged. The City & County of Honolulu has summer pro- grams and activities, as does the state Department of Edu- cation. Public libraries have reading programs, including a summer reading challenge.
Educators have long been aware of “summer slide” — the tendency for students to lose some of the academic gains they made over the school year — but this year’s summer slide would come on the heels of a two-year global pandemic.
At the top of her list is read- ing.
She recommends parents encourage keiki to look at the prices and to read the signs in the aisles and the labels on the grocery items. This not only keeps them reading, it also exercises their math and deci- sion-making skills.
“Let your child experiment and make mistakes,” Bai- ley-Walsh says. “That is a re- al-world learning experience. You make mistakes and say, ‘What can we learn from this? What can we do better next time?’”
“So, parents this year partic- ularly, are paying really close attention to summer setback because just by what they’re hearing on the news or see- ing in statistics, it shows the pandemic has had a negative impact on education,” says Kaipo Bailey-Walsh, principal of kindergarten to sixth grade at St. Andrew’s Schools in Ho- nolulu.
“All independent, public and charter schools develop, create and distribute reading lists for the summer months,” she says. “But what I have suggested to parents through- out my lifetime as an educator is to let your child choose what they want to read ... That will encourage them to read more.

Taking this attitude teaches children coping skills — how to manage negative emotions — which are vital for social and emotional learning.

Another tip Bailey-Walsh has is to incorporate learning into everyday tasks, like cook- ing.
“It’s all part of the learn- ing,” she adds. “You don’t want to discourage them.”
“Then, mix it up. Point them to poetry, nonfiction. Nonfiction books can appeal to their interests and hobbies.”

“Maybe say, ‘If you read so
Bailey-Walsh cautions that cooking can get messy — especially with young keiki involved — so caregivers should take that into consider- ation from the outset to avoid frustration down the line.
“The real world is not only academic,” Bailey-Walsh points out. “It’s also about interacting with other people ... (building) those positive relationships (and) learning to make responsible decisions are important in addition to ac- ademics.”
