Singer’s Soulfulness Fosters Connections

More than 800 keiki and their supporters from 31 schools across O‘ahu participated in April’s Keiki Rainbow Run at Kaka‘ako Waterfront Park. The 1.4- mile fun run, organized by the nonprofit Kaho‘omiki, raised $10,000 to support physical education and nutrition programs in local schools.

enny Yim of Mānoa makes music that touches the mind and the heart. The soulful singer’s songs are inspired by
her own life experiences and struggles, re- sulting in real, raw lyrics.
“I think music is one of the best ways to connect people and one of the closest things in life to magic,” says Yim. “I love that I can talk so freely about things through songs, and it opens up the door to so many important con- versations.”
Yim often broaches not-so-typical topics to deepen that connection. She reveals she wrote a song for her grandmother’s funeral.
“I love writing about hard things,” shares Yim. “I love talking about the weird and less talked about aspects of mental health or just difficult situations. Those feelings and emo- tions that are so hard to put into words are the things I try to capture in my songs. I like talking about those less talked about things because I think it’s important for us to realize that we’re not weird or embarrassing, and a lot of us actually struggle with the same things.”
