   The Grateful Gourmet
I ’m thrilled to start this column and share my two biggest passions. After more than 25 years as a registered nurse, I
• Have a plan — aka a recipe!
was struggling to figure out what my purpose was. I found it in Adam Leipzig’s TED Talk, “How to Find Your Purpose in Five Min- utes.” My purpose is to connect people to God through cooking and eating by making it a time of connection and peace.
• Have a time frame — e.g., bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.
This column will provide delicious reci- pes for food — and for delicious living.

Here’s what I learned the day I was ‘ono for hummus but didn’t have garbanzo beans. I could
hear my grandma’s voice
     saying, “Use what you have!”
So, I substituted Oki- nawan sweet potatoes and threw in some beets. Wow! It was de- licious!
The creative zone opens you up to inspi- ration. This particular experience provided the following guidelines for a meaningful life:
     • Know what you want — what are you ‘ono for?
  • Clarity — do you want sweet po- tatoes or Okinawan sweet potatoes?
