Creative writing was al- ways Gorham’s first love. Back in the 1980s, he was an English major at UC Irvine and studied under Charles Wright, who eventually be- came U.S. poet laureate. But, he knew making a living out of writing was unlikely so he decided to pursue physics as a second degree.
“Someone like me who studied the universe simply can’t ignore evidence of ar- chitecture and design,” he says. “It isn’t something that is easy to dismiss as scien- tists. As a scientist, you are forced to try to be logical and you know where logic ends. We love it most when some- thing doesn’t fit our theory — when it completely breaks it. We know there’s more work
His hope for readers is that they read the poems and feel moved in some way.
“I actually didn’t feel like I was particularly good at phys- ics. What got me through it was my English degree — it lifted me into this more cre- ative way of thinking. That somehow melded together with physics in a way that helped me get through areas
