uring a school assembly in front of cheering students, teachers and staff members, Esther Kwon —
assistant principal at Daniel K. Inouye El- ementary School on Schofield Barracks in Wahiawā — became the latest recipient of the esteemed Milken Educator Award on Jan. 31.
Regarded as the “Oscar Award of Teach- ing,” it honors outstanding excellence in education and comes with an unrestricted $25,000 cash prize. The Milken Educator Awards program was launched by the Milk- en Family Foundation in 1987.
A shocked Kwon was presented the sur- prise award by Jane Foley, senior vice-pres- ident of the Milken Family Foundation, Lt. Gov. Sylvia Luke and state Department of Education superintendent Keith Hayashi. Kwon is the sole Milken Educator Award winner from Hawai‘i this year.
