ust off your yukatas: The popular Mililani Hongwanji Bon Dance re- turns at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 19-20 with
food trucks, a craft fair, lantern parade, silent auction and, of course, three solid hours each night of festive bon dancing.
Held at the Mililani Hongwanji Buddhist Temple at 95-257 Kaloapau St., the annu- al event has been taking place since 1977. Since those early days, it has evolved into an experience that includes both traditional and contemporary elements of bon dance culture.
“Throughout the years, songs have changed dramatically while still paying trib- ute to our ancestors and also the era of the sugar plantation and pre- and post-World War II,” says the Rev. David Fujimoto. “Along the years, like many other temples, we’ve added live Okinawan music all the while keeping popular Fukushima Ondo. We’re seeing more of the younger generation coming to the event.”
