Students from Our Lady of Good Counsel School (OLGC) in Pearl City collected 443 pairs of slippers for the Sisters of Saint Francis at Our Lady of Kea‘au to help the needy along the Leeward coast.

A total of 226 students, from kindergarten all the way up to eighth grade, participated in the drive.

“By doing so, our students learn that no matter how young a person may be, they can make a huge difference in someone’s life,” stated school staff member Ginger Kamisugi.

Each year, OLGC features a theme during Catholic Schools Week in January, and a specific day is chosen as its service day.

This year, the school picked the theme of Rubba Slippa Day with the goal of collecting pairs of rubber slippers for less fortunate keiki.

“Our climate here in Hawaii gives us the ability to go without covered shoes, but because of thorny ground cover, sharp bits of trash (such as glass) and the possibility of getting a nasty infection, going without foot protection can be risky,” Kamisugi noted.
