When RomGym 8 Minute Fitness Honolulu opened last year, Celeste Oshiro Wong quickly established a routine of working out on its ROM (range of motion) machines every morning before work.

The quick yet intense workout was perfect for Oshiro Wong, who works at the Center for Clinical Skills at the UH John A. Burns School of Medicine. She had been running for years, but she liked that the ROM allowed for a full-body workout in just 8 minutes.

But Oshiro Wong soon grew tired of lugging around her workout clothes every day and driving to town on the weekends just to go to the gym.

So she decided to bring her gym to her neighborhood: In January of this year, she opened RomGym 8 Minute Fitness in Waipio.

“All the other gyms are located more in town,” Oshiro Wong said. “I really wanted to have something out here. And selfishly for myself, I wanted a RomGym to work out at.

“The whole intention of the RomGym is to have high intensity work-outs where you are working really hard for a short period of time,” she explained.

The workout lasts for 8 minutes, naturally, and is comprised of a 4-minute upper-body workout and a 4-minute lower-body one. Oshiro Wong recommends that people come in at least three times a week.

“On the ROM machine, you are getting strength, flexibility and cardio all at the same time. And the beauty of the machines is that the harder you work, the harder the machine challenges you.

“You will not have the same workout twice.”

RomGym, she added, is suitable for anybody, no matter what the person’s skill level or what his or her workout goals are. She also has seen gym members lose weight, increase energy, or build muscle.

“I think what fascinates me the most is that anybody can come work out in this gym,” she said. “It doesn’t matter how big or small, old or young, strong or weak – anybody can work out on these machines.”

In addition to the three ROMs, RomGym Waipio also has five whole-body vibration machines.

“Those are great for improving circulation, increasing strength and improving bone density,” she explained.

In the coming months, RomGym Waipio also hopes to begin offering community workout events. Oshiro Wong aspires to have her gym be a gathering place for like-minded people in addition to a workout space.

RomGym 8 Minute Fitness Waipio is located at 94-1235B Ka Uka Blvd. and it’s open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
