Maya Hoover Headlines Poetic Song Concert

A classical evening of poetry in song awaits attendees of Chamber Music Hawaii’s Italian-language program with mezzo-soprano Maya Hoover, set for 7:30 p.m. next Monday in Paliku Theatre.

Three numbers are on the April 14 program – Shema: Five Poems of Primo Levi by Simon Sargon, based on the collection by Italian-Jewish poet and Holocaust survivor Primo Levi; Il tramonto by Ottorino Respighi, based on The Sunset by English romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley; and Sonata en Concert by Jean-Michel Damase.

Hoover, a UH associate professor of music and worldwide performer, will be accompanied by CMH Tresemble, featuring Susan McGinn (flute), Joanna Morrison (cello), James Moffitt (clarinet) and Thomas Yee (piano). The full Galliard String Quartet will accompany the tresemble on the third number.

There will be refreshments at intermission, and a meet-and-greet with the performers will follow the concert.

Tickets cost $30, with discounts available for seniors, military and students. Buy them at chambermusichawaii.org or by calling 489-5038 in advance, or at the door beginning 30 minutes before the show.
