Makahiki Kuilima Saturday At Turtle Bay

New Year’s celebrations aren’t only about fireworks and mochi pounding. Turtle Bay Resort hosts its second annual Makahiki Kuilima Jan. 17 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The free event includes traditional makahiki activities, such as hukihuki (tug of war), ‘ulu maika (lawn bowling), uma (arm wrestling), heihei kukini (foot racing), ‘o‘o ihe (spear throwing) and hula, as well as artisans, crafters, educational exhibits, cultural demonstrations and performances.

Makahiki Kuilima is presented by Naepuni Aloha, a parent group of Ke Kula ‘o Samuel M. Kamakau, a P-12 program dedicated to teaching Hawaiian language and culture.

The North Shore resort makahiki is the last in a series held by the group.
