Kipapa School Team Takes Top Prize In ‘Olelo Video Contest

Kipapa Elementary School took the top award in its division at the ‘Olelo Youth Xchange Student Video Awards banquet April 27 at the Ihilani hotel in Ko Olina.

The ninth annual competition earned the Cougar team a Sony video camera, as well as pride among its peers. Only 32 schools were judged the best out of more than 600 entries across the state competing in 13 categories.

A perennial winner at the Youth Xchange, Kipapa’s entry this year was Malama I Ke Kai, under the category Pae’aina – Sustainability. The six student narrators stood amid taro patches and tidepools, explaining the wisdom of the ancestors who followed sustainable conservation practices – “and now it’s up to you!”

All winning entries can be viewed through ‘OleloNet On Demand by visiting olelo.org/yxc.

The competition began in 2003 to encourage dialogue among students on community issues, and it has grown to engage, educate and empower keiki, providing them with a compelling voice for positive change and community well-being.
