Kapolei Salon Seeks Prom Wear

This Sunday the community has a chance to help girls from West Oahu schools to attend their proms – including Kapolei, Campbell High, Waianae and Nanakuli high schools, American Renaissance and Island Pacific academies – by donating formal dresses and accessories during the Prom Dress Drive Spartea from 3 to 5 p.m. at Beautiville Salon, Spa & Beautique.

Hosted by the Kapolei salon, the event aims to offset prom costs for economically disadvantaged and underprivileged high school girls.

“Through my personal life experience, coming from a financially disadvantaged and broken home, it was challenging to attend prom because it was very expensive,” explained Beautiville owner Scarlett Godinez-Dumadag.

When she opened Beautiville, she decided to help other girls in similar situations. “I was living my dream and knew that having a Prom Dress Drive and Dream Giveaway would be my way to give back to the keiki,” she said. “And it’s a feeling of gratitude because I know I am giving the opportunity to experience an important milestone in a child’s life.”

The giveaway spartea – a mix of spa, tea-sipping and a party – will offer afternoon tea, refreshments, pampering stations, door prizes and Zumba sessions led by Kapolei’s Dew Fitness.

In addition to gently used gowns, Beautiville also accepts handbags, shoes, fashion accessories and unused cosmetics. The girls will be able to shop for their dresses prior to prom season. To identify girls with financial need, Beautiville is working directly with area schools.

As Godinez-Dumadag sees it, the real significance of the spartea is the hope that the teenagers they help will pay it forward.

“The beauty of this event is the gift of giving that just goes in circles,” she explained. “The girls who received dresses are very grateful, then they either save their dress for another girl afterward or save up for a dress to donate. This is the focus: to encourage charitable giving, promote inner beauty and bring out their self-confidence.”

Admission is $10. To RSVP, visit the salon or purchase tickets online at promdressdrivespartea.eventbrite.com.

For donors who cannot attend Sunday’s drive, Beautiville will continue to collect items through Jan. 31.
