On a recent rainy Monday, Kanani Carvalho wanted to make chicken long rice soup, so she made a stop at Foodland in Kapolei.

As she made her purchase at 1 p.m., MidWeek’s representative approached Kanani with a simple question. She answered correctly and instantly won a $150 Foodland shopping spree.

“I love this Foodland,” said this week’s Mystery Shopper, who works as a produce manager and naturopathic doctor’s assistant at The Source Natural Foods in Kailua. “I live in Pearl City, but I come to this Foodland because they have a lot of organic things here. I also like the R. Field inside, and the people are very nice. I’m really picky where I shop, and I love the selection here.”

Kanani was born and raised in Kalihi, and graduated from Farrington High School in 1974.

She and husband Kenneth have two children, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. In her free time, she enjoys cooking and sewing. She also likes to read MidWeek.

“I like all the news about local things happening around the island,” she said. “And I like the advertisements, especially for local farmers and businesses.”
