Kalaeloa Races To Support U.S. VETS

The community is invited to put the pedal to the metal for a good cause from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Podium Raceway.

Fifty percent of the proceeds from the sale of adult race passes during the inaugural May 19 Flagship FastLube Military Appreciation Day Grand Prix will go to U.S. VETS Barbers Point Homeless Veterans Facility.

All one has to do is say five simple words when purchasing the $25 pass: “I’m racing for the vets!”

“Podium Raceway is committed to helping our community at all levels,” said co-owner Warren Cole. “The Barbers Point Homeless Veterans Facility is an essential part of the community that provides an invaluable service to both our vets and the island at large.”

The event is being organized by Flagship FastLube to recognize contributions of the military in celebration of Military Appreciation Month. Sponsor teams from other businesses, including Napa Auto Parts Hawaii, Aloha Shriners, Island Oil and Supply Co. and Pronto Auto Parts, also are participating.

“We want to serve those who’ve served us,” explained Chris Price, president of Flagship FastLube. “No vet should return after serving his or her country and find (themselves) on the street without a roof over their heads.”

Racing isn’t the only way supporters can help. Various vendors and food trucks also will be collecting money and donating a portion of their proceeds to the organization. Nathan’s Famous Hot Dogs, for example, has pledged 100 percent of its proceeds to U.S. VETS.

Families also can enjoy a car show featuring more than 100 hot rods, Mustangs and Camaros. The event also will feature entertainment by local deejays and radio personalities, contests and door prizes.

Since opening its doors in 2002, U.S. VETS has served more than 200,000 veterans. In addition to the Barbers Point location, there is a second facility in Waianae.

“We are extremely humbled by seeing our neighbors and the community come out in support of our veterans, especially in such a fun way,” stated executive director of the U.S. VETS Barbers Point site, Dr. Kimberley Cook.

The program offers transitional housing, permanent housing for disabled veterans and long-term independent housing for veterans reintegrating into the workforce.

Podium Raceway is located at 91-1085 Lexington St. in Kapolei. For more information about the event, visit flagshiphawaii.com.
