Kailua’s Fireworks, Air Show Both A Go

The nonprofit Kailua Fireworks organization is proud to announce that the fireworks are on for July 4, 2014.

Friday’s celebration starts at 6 p.m. with the familiar Twilight Air Show over Kailua Bay, featuring veteran pilots Clint Churchill in his Extra 300L and Hank Bruckner in his CAP-10C. Expect end-over-end tumbles, the “Avalanche,” rolling turns and more thrills in the men’s 30-minute performance. The Marines marching band plays at 6:30 in Kailua Beach Park, and the aerial fireworks display starts at 8 p.m. from a barge in the bay.

A&B Properties will provide free round-trip shuttles between 4:30 and 10 p.m. to Kailua Beach Center from Kailua Elementary School and the parking area behind Macy’s. Other parking sites are at Lanikai Elementary (noon to 10 p.m.), and Kailua Intermediate and Kainalu Elementary (1 to 10 p.m.).

Volunteers and more donations are always welcome. Call Jana Holden at 478-5230 or visit kailuafireworks.net for details. Checks made out to Kailua Fireworks also can be mailed to P.O. Box 342043, Kailua HI 96734. The group, founded by eight Kailua residents in 2013, wants to build up a reserve to continue the tradition in future years. The first Kailua firework show was in 1948; it went dark only in 2012 when support faltered.
