Helping People Live Healthier Lives

DAVE HEYWOOD, CEO of UnitedHealthcare Community Plan

For more than 15 years, UnitedHealthcare in Hawai‘i has worked hard to offer value-based, sustainable and person-centered solutions that meet our members’ health care needs. We currently provide health care coverage to more than 100,000 people in Hawai‘i, and partner with more than 6,500 health care providers, including hospitals, long-term care facilities, community clinics, home care providers and caregivers across all the islands.

Historically, health care has focused on managing medical costs in the doctor’s office, the emergency room and the hospital room, but 80% of an individual’s health is determined by what happens outside of a doctor’s office. Health is more than just a set of clinical metrics, and UnitedHealthcare is working to redefine access to care by addressing the underlying causes that create the need for medical care for our most vulnerable populations in the first place — issues like food insecurity, homelessness, unemployment and lack of transportation.

Social determinants of health are broadly defined as the social, economic and environmental opportunities and resources that can impact health outcomes, and we are developing capabilities to address social determinants holistically. Our goal is to improve access to, and delivery of, community resources that are the gateway to overall well-being and ultimately impact health outcomes.

To support our members and communities during the pandemic, UnitedHealthcare has been expanding access to care and providing support and resources to help our communities combat the coronavirus. We have waived member cost-sharing for coronavirus treatment on all health plans until at least April 20, 2021. We have and will continue to provide personal protection equipment, such as facemasks and gloves, to health care providers, community organizations and our members.

Our UnitedHealthcare mission is to help people live healthier lives and make the health system work better for everyone. We look forward to continuing to serve our members in innovative ways with compassion and integrity.
