Game Tips For Windward Oahu’s Prep Football Watchers

With Castle, Kahuku, Kailua and Kalaheo opening fall football camp this week, we offer the top five “must see” games ahead.

Punahou at Kahuku Aug. 17

Coming as it does in week one, this is the earliest of a host of marquee matchups. A rematch of last year’s Division I state championship game (won by Kahuku 30-24), expect a playoff-type atmosphere. A second battle – in the state title game in November – is a strong possibility, given their returning veterans.

Kahuku at Castle Sept. 14

The Knights, whose last win in this series came in 2004, meet the Red Raiders earlier than usual, and they play tough, so this could be a game to remember.

Castle at Kailua Sept. 21

The teams will renew their rivalry in week three with the Hammer Trophy at stake. This could be pivotal for both in the OIA Red East. Castle coach Nelson Maeda is always at his best when preparing for his Kailua alma mater, having posted a 10-6 mark in the series to date.

Kahuku v. Farrington Sept. 28 (at Roosevelt)

This has been THE game on the OIA Red East for several years, and all signs point to it being key to who wins the race again this fall. Farrington handed Kahuku its only loss in 2011 before the Red Raiders returned the favor by shutting out the Govs 23-0 in the OIA championship game.

Kalaheo v.s Kalani Sept. 29 (at Kaiser)

The Falcons beat the Mustangs 39-36 last year. Can another high-scoring affair be expected? The outcome could figure big in the White Conference.
