On a recent Wednesday, Fred Ota went to Shirokiya for lunch, but he also bought some books. At 1:50 p.m., MidWeek‘s representative spotted Fred standing near the entrance of the store waiting for his wife, and approached him with a simple question. He answered correctly and instantly won a $150 Shirokiya shopping spree.

“I like shopping at Shirokiya because I like the food here,” said this week’s Mystery Shopper. “I also like their selection of video games and DVDs.”

Fred was born and raised in Japan, and moved to California in 1955, where he retired as a maintenance supervisor at San Francisco airport. He moved to Hawaii about seven years ago with wife Suzanne, who is originally from here. In his free time, he enjoys traveling, bonsai plants and gardening. He also likes to read MidWeek.

“I like the information and news it has,” he said. “I also look at the advertisements, that’s for sure. And Ron Nagasawa’s column.”
