Kailua Canoe Club may have hit on the tastiest way to boost a scholarship fund – the fish fry.

The club will have its third annual fish fry from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. July 27 at Don Weir’s house, 1021 Akumu St., complete with the best catches off Baja peninsula from Weir and his fishing buddies, and a full menu of pupus, entrees, desserts, beer, wine, water and prizes from local merchants.

Tickets cost $25 in advance or $30 at the door, and bring your own beach chair.

“My fishing partners generously donate 10 percent of their total catch to make this event happen,” explained Weir, who notes that the one-semester, renewable grants from the fund are awarded to Kailua Canoe Club paddlers who are graduating high school seniors.

The club’s first recipient, Nick Herrera, has completed is first two semesters at Windward Community College with a straight-A average.

“Nick hopes to continue on with his education at UH Manoa in the School of Mechanical Engineering,” Weir said.

On the menu are guacamole and smoked yellowtail dips, homemade salsa and black bean-and-olive dips, tortilla chips, grilled yellowtail and chicken, homemade posole (hearty pork soup), Mexican rice and corn, German chocolate cake and pistachio nut cake.
