Dolphin Tale 2

Overall, what did you think?

It was a very thoughtful and inspiring movie filled with many positive messages. Watching the magnificent dolphins on the big screen was exciting and captivating. I was engaged from the very beginning.

Without giving away the ending, what was one of your favorite scenes?

I was especially touched by a scene where Sawyer (played by Nathan Gamble) received a gift from Dr. McCarthy (Morgan Freeman). The gift was an old vintage watch that wouldn’t work until Sawyer took it out of its box. Dr. McCarthy used the watch as an analogy for Sawyer, explaining that, like the watch, he too needs to step out of his “box” to experience new horizons. Those words of wisdom and the metaphor made this scene a poignant moment in the movie.

On a scale of one to four stars, what would you rate this film?

★★★.

What did you think of the cinematography?

The underwater cinematography is visually stunning and enriches substantially the film’s appeal.

Was the message/theme clear?

The theme of the movie was learning how to deal with change and life’s decisions and challenges. Not only did the human characters face this struggle, the animals in the film faced their own heartbreaking situations. This theme was expressed in the final line of the movie, “When one door closes, another opens. Life is full of possibilities.”

Did it remind you of any other works of film?

This sequel included many of the same elements that made the original Dolphin Tale successful. Like its 2011 predecessor, Dolphin Tale 2 is based on an inspiring true story.

Did any of the actors stand out?

All of the cast members from the original Dolphin Tale return in this charming sequel, including veteran actors Morgan Freeman, Ashley Judd and Harry Connick Jr. But I was most impressed with the two young lead actors, Nathan Gamble and Cozi Zuehlsdorff. They had great chemistry together on screen and did an excellent job portraying the struggles of their characters. It also was a pleasant surprise to see a cameo of Hawaii-born surfer Bethany Hamilton.

Did you identify with any of the characters?

I can relate to Sawyer and his struggle leaving everything he knows for a life-changing experience. Change is never easy to deal with, but with the right guidance and support it can lead to tremendous growth and opportunity.

Did the soundtrack contribute significantly to the film?

The soundtrack was simple but complemented the individual scenes very well. It was effective in creating a hopeful and compassionate tone throughout the movie. The theme song, You Got Me by Gavin DeGraw, was uplifting and the perfect song to end the movie.

What’s your favorite movie snack?

I’ve always loved Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, but my new favorite movie snack is Cinnamon Glazed Macadamia Nuts from the Kahala Nuts kiosk. They are so tasty.

On a different note, what’s new with you?

I have been busy performing and hosting at numerous events and concerts here in Hawaii and on the Mainland. I will be the sole vocalist in a unique performance with aerialists in Moscow International Circus. The circus will be in Honolulu Oct. 3-5 for eight shows at Blaisdell Arena. Tickets are available for purchase at Ticketmaster.com and Blaisdell Box Office.
