Concert Set For Ailing Singer

Windward residents are being asked to help an old friend – Mark Ransom of the Kailua-based Saloon Pilots band – who has been diagnosed with stage 3 throat cancer.

The bluegrass band, which plays twice a month at Big City Diner in Kailua, is helping to put on “Held for Ransom,” a concert to benefit Ransom and American Cancer Society, at 7 p.m. Thursday at Crossroads at Hawaiian Brian’s.

A bassist and vocalist for Saloon Pilots – and a lifelong non-smoker, Ransom is undergoing exhausting treatments for his illness, which mean that the full-time musician is unable to work. Three of his current and former bands – Saloon Pilots, Doolin Rakes and Hooligan’s Harp – have rallied together to raise funds on his behalf.

Suggested donation at the door is $10, but attendees are encouraged to give more if they can. Expect a raffle and dancing in addition to the musical interludes. Donations of auction items are still being accepted; email Kilin Reece at krstringrepair@gmail.com.

Those who cannot attend, can contribute digitally at fundrazer.com/campaigns/ciqsd. Organizers are hoping to raise at least $10,000.
