College Draws Pioneering Speakers To Women History Month
Windward Community College will mark Women’s History Month next week with a menu of speakers on the national theme of “Celebrating Women of Character, Courage and Commitment.”

* U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard will speak at 3 p.m. March 17 on her experience as a woman in the military, her journey to Washington, and lessons learned during her first term representing Hawaii’s 2nd Congressional District.
* Inmates from the Women’s Community Correctional Center will discuss how they have discovered forgiveness and healing through creative writing and performance programs like “Voices from the Inside.” Their talk begins at 10 a.m. March 18.
* Filmmaker Connie Florez will speak at 11:30 a.m. March 20 on how individuals view womanhood and identity. As the director and producer of The Glades Project documentary, Florez will share the history of the local mahu (transgender) scene at the Glade Show Lounge in Chinatown during the 1960s and ’70s, where genders were blurred.
The college has sponsored Women’s History Month annually since 2005 with a series of interesting and provocative speakers.
