Civic Club Sets Cultural Scavenger Hunt

Ko’olaupoko Hawaiian Civic Club invites teams to compete in a cultural scavenger hunt March 17, starting and finishing at Windward Mall. Teams have the opportunity to win a $1,000 grand prize.

Theme is “Legendary Places of Ko’olaupoko,” and it’s designed to teach participants about historic sites. Teams will receive clues and are sent out to locate and document their visits to various places from Kualoa to Maunalua that are found within the traditional district of Ko’olaupoko. Teams will compete to see how many places they can visit in four hours.

The event is part of Celebrate Ko’olaupoko!, a yearlong series of activities that commemorate the ahupua’a of Windward Oahu.

“We are excited about this opportunity to raise awareness of some of our important places that were recognized and honored by the Hawaiian people in centuries past,” said chairwoman Kimi Apiki. “Every ahupua’a has legendary places that were important in our culture or our history, and we are pleased to share the knowledge about some of these with our community.”

Both high school and community teams are welcome to enter; the entry fee is $500 for high school teams and $250 for community teams. Each team can consist of two to four players. Entry forms and fees must be received by Friday by the civic club.

Check-in begins at 8 a.m., and the event starts at 9 a.m. Teams must visit a minimum of four sites in order to qualify for the grand prize drawing. Lunch for all participants will be provided at 1 p.m.
