It’s Batters Up At Hewett Field

The city parks department will honor Alice Hewett Saturday with a ceremony that dedicates Heeia Neighborhood Park’s ball field in her name.

A resolution originating with City Councilman Ikaika Anderson got the ball rolling (so to speak) in August of 2012, and now the official plaque is ready for mounting. And the 80-something Hewett, better known as “Auntie Alice,” wants to spread the word. “After 55 years there, I’d like to let some of the old folks know about it,” she told MidWeek‘s Windward Islander.

The lifelong Heeia resident was employed by the parks department for years, keeping the grounds clean and orderly from Ahuimanu to Kualoa. With her own brood of nine children, 18 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren, it’s no surprise that she became a key volunteer for at least six youth sports leagues on the Windward side after her retirement.

Ceremonies should begin around 10 a.m. at the park for the Alice Pualeilani Kana’e Hewett Softball Field. For updates and details, call Kelsey Takahashi at 233-7306.
