Applying JROTC Discipline To The Sport Of Water Polo

No one doubts who sets the pace for Kalaheo’s water polo team – and not just in the pool. Senior Sarai Newbold relishes the role.

“I do JROTC, which helps,” said Newbold. “They stress leading by example. If I’m not passing anything down, then I’m not helping.”

Of course, there’s no greater way to lead than with big scoring nights, such as in a recent game with Kailua where she tallied eight goals to fuel an 11-6 Mustang win.

“That was one of those games that could have gone either way,” said Newbold, who had 15 goals on the season, heading into last weekend. “A lot of my scoring was because of my teammates. They led me into all of them, and our goalie, Gabby (Clark), was amazing.”

As the Mustangs hit the stretch run of their OIA season, Newbold took time out to talk with MidWeek‘s Windward Islander.

Who has had the biggest impact on your life? My stepmom (Rebekah), definitely. When we met, we really hit it off. I needed that mother figure, and she was willing to be it. She’s really helped me through everything that I’ve accomplished. She helps me to go that extra mile in the things that I do.

What area of your game did you work on the most on during the off-season? I joined the swim team this year to do better in water polo. It’s helped.

Who is Kalaheo’s best practice player – the teammate who always gives 110 percent? We have a lot who come with that motivation. I couldn’t name just one. We’re all here to get things done.

What film could you watch over and over? I’m a huge sucker for The Outsiders. I could watch that movie for days.

What item couldn’t you live without? Probably my camera. I like photography.

What website do you go to the most? My email. I’ve been waiting on a lot of replies from colleges, so that’s where I go to the most.

What accomplishment are you the most proud of in athletics? I was really proud of my team at the Leilehua game. It was definitely my favorite game of those we have played. Even though we lost, I will never forget it. We played a lot of tight defense, and it was great to see us progress.

What is your least favorite household chore? Probably cleaning the bathroom.

What do you like to do in your spare time? I have a 2-year-old sister who I am trying to spend a lot of time with since I plan on going away for college. She’s at a great age.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? I’m not quite sure yet. I do intend to join the military, but I’m not sure which branch. I’ll get there.

You are stuck on Kahoolawe and can have an endless supply of just one food. What would it be? Fried chicken.

Who would be your choice for a celebrity date on a Saturday night? That’s a great question. Probably either Ryan Gosling or Jeremy Renner.
