Aiea High’s Best Dancers Take The Stage In Weekend Concert

The best of Aiea High School’s dance program will be on display at Spring Dance Concert 2014, which has three shows this weekend.

Curtain goes up at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the H1 dance studio on campus, 4 p.m. Saturday at H1 dance studio and 4 p.m. Sunday at Pearl City Cultural Center on the Pearl City High School campus.

Students in Aiea’s Repertory Dance Company – which features students hand-picked from the school’s dance classes – will perform ballet and modern dance, directed by instructor Desiree Cremer, who has been teaching at Aiea since 2005.

The dance program started off small – Cremer was initially teaching only about a dozen dancers in the cafeteria – but has grown substantially in the last several years. This year, the ballet and modern dance class has more than 130 students enrolled.

Graduates of the program regularly go on to study dance in college. This year, for example, one student is off to the American Musical and Dramatic Academy and another plans to major in dance at Marymount Manhattan College.

Guest performers for the concert include Amy Schiffer, an associate professor in UH Manoa’s dance department, and Nicholas Hyde, a former Aiea High student who now studies dance at UH.

Tickets are $8 for adults at the H1 dance studio, $10 for adults at Pearl City Cultural Center and $5 for students and children at both locations.
